Victorinox quality is legendary and this is no exception. I’ll focus on my experience here:

Everyone needs something different, but for me this is the closest model to what I'd call perfect. The scissors are a must-have for hygiene and all manner of cutting tasks including thread, bandages, and anything that benefits from more support during a cut than you get with the one-sided nature of a knife.

The bottle opener/cap lifter is another favourite of mine. Rarely do I use it for that but as a pry tool, and as a wide flat-head screwdriver for camera stuff, it's excellent. I’ve gotten into many devices with its help.

I love to double-knot my boots for hiking since single knots kept falling apart on me, but it was always a slow and painful process taking them off until I tried using the corkscrew to help with this. I’ll never go back! I don’t open much wine but the ease and speed it brings to unlacing makes it a must-have as well. Assisting my decision further was the fact that the alternative offered on some models is a Phillips driver which I know many people love but, I wouldn’t have much use for such a thing.

I've yet to make use of the hook but I really wanted it as the possibilities seemed plentiful. One comment I'll make on it though is I find it nearly impossible to open without some sort of assistance, like taking the tweezers out to use as a little pry bar - something I've occasionally done on the awl as well due to the very tight spring.

I'd say the "flagship" tool of the Mountaineer is the metal file, because if you don't need that, you probably have a Climber. I primarily use it for my nails actually - I find the larger size and aggressive cut vs what most nail files offer to be quite nice, and it works for other hygiene-related tasks too. I find smoothing out or taking down rough or thick areas where you might otherwise be tempted or forced to rip or cut them is cleaner and less damaging. It's incredibly easy to clean under some water too – mine still looks brand new after much use as a result. I've also used it for minor repair work on plastic that saved me from an expensive replacement purchase, and I know from videos that if the day comes, it will do a great job on wood or metal too.

Overall, the Mountaineer is an excellent tool for my needs and the smallest one that offers everything I really wanted, but it’s only near-perfect. Below are some dream tweaks that would take it from 90 to 100% for me:

For my purposes, the scissors offer all the knife blade I need, so I find the large and small blades a bit redundant. Dropping these would slim the tool and might make it safe for flying. Alternatively, I’d rather have a scalpel holder than a built-in blade because it’s easy and cheap to take out for flights, or to swap if it gets dull or damaged. I’ve found scalpels to also be sharper and more precise than any other blade I’ve used, meaning they’re safer and cause less collateral damage, particularly for hygiene purposes.

Given the option I'd also trade the can opener for the new package opener found on the Companion, or some other hooked "pull-blade", perhaps similar to the orange peeler on the Mini Champ, as opening packages with such a tool would be the safest, easiest method, and is something we all do a lot more than opening cans these days I'm sure. I might trade the awl for the chisel found on the Ranger too.

Je souhaitais un SAK ni trop gros mais avec des fonctions biens précise en plus des lames a savoir le tire-bouchon, une lime et des ciseaux.
Mon seul reproche mais c’est pour la plupart des SAK est que j’aimerai que les lames soient au centre pour l’équilibre.

Habe das Messer als Geschenk für meine Freundin gekauft die es hauptsächlich als Nagelschere und Nagelfeile oder für Kleinlichkeiten im Büro benutzt. Aber auch so kann die Verwendung eines zuverlässigen EDC´s aussehen.  Die Qualität und Verarbeitung ist sehr gut und wenn man das möchte ist das  Mountaineer ein vielseitiger und guter Begleiter der einem durchaus helfen kann seine Alltag zu meistern.

I recently ordered a new Mountaineer to replace one I had lost just over a year ago. Yes, I could have bought a less expensive knife but, I wanted one like the one I had lost as I found uses for most of the tools included in this model. The reason I give 4 stars rather than 5 is that the toothpick seems less durable than my old one and, the bottle-opener is a bit harder to open than the other tools. Perhaps these minor things are not worth a whole star but, you cannot give a rating involving fractions.

Wie alle Victorinox-Messer ist auch der Mountaineer in hervorragender Qualität gearbeitet und zeugt in seiner Ausführung von einem traditionellen, genuin schweizerischen Erfindergeist.

Aufgrund seiner Metallsäge finde ich ihn persönlich praktischer als den bekannteren Huntsman, der in dieser Liga sonst "everybodys Darling" zu sein scheint.

Ohne den Korkenzieher und stattdessen mit einem Phillips-Schraubendreher 1/2 ausgestattet, hätte der Mountaineer einen noch grösseren Nutzen für mich und wäre meines Erachtens damit das "perfekte" kompakte Taschenmesser für den Alltag.

Gerne dürfte es dann einen Namen wie "Urban Craftsman" tragen und zum Preis von CHF 40.00 verkauft werden.

Für mich das fast "perfekte" Messer

Ich habe mein Mountaineer als Kind vor 40 Jahren in Zell am See selbst gekauft. Damals noch ohne den Mehrzweckhaken. Es ist immer noch regelmäßig in Gebrauch. Nur die Feder der Schere ist vor Jahren gebrochen. Das Messer ist super nützlich und von hoher Qualität.

I wanted a tool which had scissors and corkscrew but also a file and the ability to hold toothpick, tweezers and pen but not be too large to prevent from carrying in the pocket.  The Mountaineer fits the bill perfectly.  Great functionality and portability.

Perfect Combination

Seit Jahren hat das Mountaineer einen fixen Stammplatz in meiner Hosentasche. Für zig kleine Sachen setze ich es ein und es hat sich zu einem unersetzlichen Allroundwerkzeug entwickelt. Wenn ich es nicht bei mir habe, so fehlt mir definitiv etwas.

I bought my first Swiss Army knife, the Mountaineer, in Munich. I was there visiting and soaking up the culture. (Pardon the pun, soaking up beer!). It was and still is a fine piece of machinery, and in carry it In my pocket every day. I even used the multipurpose hook to help create a paracord lanyard for it when I go aloft on my boat! I love this knife, and the tools on it are extremely useful for various tinkerings and light maintainence aboard my yacht.

My first Swiss Army knife. A brilliant device.

I don't remember when I bought my first Swiss Army Knife, but was somewhere around 1968. I have had scores of these over the years and and, of course, I have lost some, but currently own 6. They are stashed in backpacks, golf bags, bicycle seat bags, ski jackets and glove compartments! I have one of the tiny classics on my key chain. I bought the Mountaineer to replace one that has been lost. It is the ultimate tool for my lifestyle, active outdoors. I love coming to the rescue when a skier brings out a bottle of wine for lunch but forgot their corkscrew! Everything is perfect on this brand new unit.

just perfect product

Bought this knife about 12 years ago in Zermatt, and had it engraved there. It is hard to find this knife in the USA, but I carry it as my daily knife since I bought it. I backpack every year and always take this knife out, as well as use it whenever I day hike. Though it seems a bit heavy, the tools are great to have and have served me well through many days in the Sierra. I have carried Victorinox Swiss Army knives for over 40 years, and still have the original knife (not a Mountaineer) I got in 1971. For sentimental reasons that knife has been retired from daily use, though it is still functional and in fact, has been refurbished by Victorinox. However, the Mountaineeer is a great knife and I use it almost daily.

All the features I need

I think I have it almost 10 years. cuts very well through metal. the blade must be sharpened once in a while. the scisors spring got bent and does not open them properly.
